Description
LES TAPIS DU POUVOIR
LA MANUFACTURE DE LA SAVONNERIE DANS LA PREMIERE MOITIE DU XIXE SIECLE
This book is the first systematic study of the carpets woven at the Savonnerie during the first half of the 19th century. These were generally sumptuous products, designed to furnish the palaces of sovereigns and glorify their power. From attempts to extend the Louis XVI style during the Consulate, the Empire saw a rapid transition to a solemn style marked by the personalities of Percier and Fontaine.
The Restoration period was the heyday of the Savonnerie, in terms of the impressive number of orders it received, the breadth of the style developed by the main carpet designer working for the manufactory, the draughtsman Jacques-Louis de Saint-Ange, and the quality of the weavings produced in the workshops. Under the July Monarchy, the Savonnerie shone less brightly, although a certain renewal of style appeared in the 1840s.
Whatever the case, this exhibition reveals a little-known but fascinating aspect of nineteenth-century decorative arts.
