Expositions / Japan-Japanism 1867-2018

As part of the 2018 Japanisms season, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs will highlight the reciprocal influences between two great artistic nations, France and Japan, from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present day. The exhibition reveals the richness of its collections of historic Japanese artworks viewed alongside Western Japanist creations.

It presents a selection of the most beautiful pieces from the collection of some 10,000 historic artworks. It also includes contemporary creations, enriching the display with Western counterpoints created in the same vein, as well as works by seven French artisans inspired by Japan and pieces loaned by institutions, creators and private collections that have come from Japan especially for the occasion. Presented over 2,200 square meters, the exhibition covers a wide variety of artistic media, including art and design objects, fashion creations, graphic arts, photographs, etc. It is articulated around five themes: the agents of discovery, nature, time, movement and innovation.
