Description
Alvar Aalto (1989-1976) is to Finland what Picasso is to Spain or James Joyce to Ireland. As an architect, he designed and built buildings, lighting, crockery and furniture, all creations that have come to symbolise the country of 180,000 lakes. More than anything else, he has made curves his signature, drawing his inspiration from nature, playing with the low light of the midnight sun, magnifying snow and birch forests.
Born at a time when eclecticism reigned supreme, over the years he moved through a range of styles, from national romanticism to pure modernism, before softening his work by embracing humanism. Alvar Aalto or architecture re-enchanted.
