Description
This book is an invitation, in words and pictures, to enter the sophisticated atmosphere of the residences of the French royal elite between the reign of Louis XIV and the Revolution. Castles, mansions and country houses, where they lived surrounded by works of art, refined furniture and objects.
The title, 'Intimate 18th Century', sets the tone for this work, which is designed to immerse the reader in the intimacy of 17th and 18th century residences - a period when the notions of intimacy and privacy emerged and became established.
Sophistication, excellence, refinement and comfort: these are the themes of the four parts, which allow us to truly enter the residences, getting up close to the furniture and objets d'art, their patrons and those who made them. Double-page spreads allow us to get up close to remarkable objects, but also to share in the toiletries, dinners, games, tastes and habits of some of the great figures of the time. Other spreads explain how cabinetmakers, carpenters, ornamentalists, tablet makers, bronze smiths and other haberdashers worked in their shops and workshops.
