Both a reference work and a source of inspiration, this book presents the fundamental principles and different approaches to graphic composition and page layout. Based on the principle that in order to effectively break the rules, one must first master them, the first part is devoted to the different types of typographic grids (columnar, modular, hierarchical...), their specificities (formats, UX design...) and their implementation. A second part deals with free composition, which consists in diverting or freeing oneself from grids, and explores the diversity and creative richness of structures born from this approach.
Based on numerous and varied case studies (posters, websites, books, mobile applications...), the book analyzes the way each one follows, interprets or breaks the typographic grid. It thus offers the reader a real page layout workshop, which will allow him to be inspired by the most diverse compositions, whether he chooses to follow the rules... or to break them!
