Description

Illustration of the fable The Raven and the Fox by artist Jan Bajtlik.

Originally attributed to the Greek fabulist Aesop, this fable was taken up by Jean de La Fontaine and published for the first time in 1668 in his first collection entitled 'Fables choisies, mises en vers'. The crow, losing his cheese to the fox's compliments, reminds us of the importance of not letting ourselves be led astray by praise that could conceal manipulative intentions. By developing their critical faculties, children learn to evaluate compliments with discernment and to recognise the intentions behind the words. In this way, the fable encourages a thoughtful approach to our interactions.
